DOGWOOD DAYS - By Judy Dean

Updated: Feb 11

Last April a friend and I took a post-vaccine road trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains. We were desperate for a change of scene after more than a year of pandemic topped by a long Michigan winter. By the time we hit Tennessee we’d driven into the new green of spring punctuated by bright splashes of redbuds and dogwoods. The dogwoods in particular made me feel ridiculously happy. Once home I created a series of eight small collages to celebrate the sense of renewal those spring colors brought to me after a particularly dark time. Four of them re displayed below.

I love the simplicity and directness of collage. Cutting and layering paper (including many scraps from found and recycled materials) is liberating and fun. I try not to overthink things, allow myself to take risks with color and composition, and sometimes add a bit of paint or colored pencil if I feel like it.
